Explanation of Terms - What are Propellant and Gunpowder?

The term propellant serves as a collective term for components whose combustion gases develop a large volume upon ignition, allowing objects to be moved. Gunpowder refers to propellants used in firearms technology that generate high pressure upon ignition, driving the bullet through the barrel of the weapon. Depending on the intended use, various parameters such as surface properties, chemical modifications, and grain size are considered when selecting a propellant. Thus, some propellants are suitable for muzzleloaders, while others have a particularly small dispersion circle, etc.

The first explosive used as a propellant was black powder. Nowadays, it is used in hunting only as hunting black powder or cannon powder in muzzleloaders. Modern cartridges are predominantly filled with smokeless nitrocellulose powder (NC powder). Depending on the intended use, these are used with different burn rates.

Definition and Composition

NC powder, also known as smokeless powder, is a group of propellant powders mainly used in firearms. The main component is nitrocellulose, also known as guncotton. It has replaced traditional black powder in many applications because it leaves fewer residues and allows for safer handling.

Composition

Based on chemical composition, NC powder is divided into different classes:

  • Single-base: These consist solely of nitrocellulose and are mainly used in cartridges for firearms.
  • Double-base: In addition to nitrocellulose, they also contain nitroglycerin. This combination provides a higher energy density and is often used in ammunition for military and heavy hunting weapons.
  • Triple-base: In addition to nitroguanidine, they also contain diethylene glycol dinitrate or triethylene glycol dinitrate. These types are intended for special applications where controlled combustion and reduced weapon erosion are important.

Special Properties

  • Burn behavior: NC powder can burn quickly or slowly depending on its composition and particle size. Fast-burning powders are ideal for handguns and shotgun shells, while slow-burning ones are suitable for rifles and artillery.
  • Geometry: The shape of the particles (spherical, tubular, or flake form) influences the burn behavior and handling during reloading. Spherical powders, for example, can be dosed more precisely.
  • Safety: It is less susceptible to moisture and leaves fewer residues than black powder, making weapon cleaning easier and extending its lifespan.

Application and Benefits

Especially in the areas of reloading and sports shooting, NC powder is appreciated for its consistent performance and easy handling. It offers hunters and sports shooters the opportunity to precisely tailor their ammunition to their individual needs.

FAQ - Gunpowder

What is NC powder?

NC powder, also known as smokeless powder, is a propellant powder whose main component is nitrocellulose. It is primarily used in firearms because it leaves fewer residues and is safer to handle than black powder.

How much NC powder can I store?

The maximum storage amount of NC powder in private areas is 3 kg in uninhabited rooms and 5 kg in uninhabited outbuildings.

Who is allowed to use NC powder?

NC powder can only be used by individuals who possess a valid ammunition purchase certificate, hunting license, or a firearms license with the corresponding ammunition purchase entry.

What is gunpowder made of?

Gunpowder, also known as black powder, consists of a mixture of three main components: potassium nitrate (saltpeter), sulfur, and charcoal. Potassium nitrate acts as an oxidizing agent, sulfur lowers the ignition temperature and accelerates combustion, while charcoal forms the fuel.

What is the difference between black powder and gunpowder?

The difference lies mainly in the composition and use. Black powder is an old mixture of potassium nitrate (saltpeter), sulfur, and charcoal, used as a propellant in historical firearms and as an explosive. Gunpowder, however, is a modern term often referring to smokeless powder, made from chemical compounds like nitrocellulose, used in modern firearms. Smokeless powder produces fewer residues and smoke, making it more efficient and cleaner than black powder.
