Before Mowing

How Can a Thermal Imaging Drone Help Rescue Roe Deer Fawns?

Meadows provide a habitat for roe deer fawns and other wildlife. Large, powerful machinery is used for mowing, but animals can easily remain hidden in tall grass, even if the field has already been searched. For roe deer fawns, this can result in serious injury or death.

A thermal imaging drone helps with searches before mowing. Its camera reveals temperature differences and helps the search team identify possible locations of animals. Volunteers can then move any animals found out of harm’s way before mowing begins, reducing the risk of injury.

At Hunting Sport, responsible wildlife management is our priority. Together with CopterPro, we help you choose a suitable drone and the right equipment.

Using the Drone
1.
Search the Area Systematically

A drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera combines an aerial overview with the ability to detect small temperature differences. This allows hunters and farmers to search larger areas systematically.

2.
Check Potential Locations and Protect the Animals

The team reviews the images and checks any suspicious spots on the ground. Roe deer fawns and other animals in the meadow are moved out of danger before mowing.

3.
Coordinate Mowing with the Search Team

Coordinated searching and rescue help protect animals. A drone flight alone cannot guarantee that an area is completely free of wildlife.

Conditions Make a Difference.

Modern sensors can detect small temperature differences. Cool early mornings are often particularly suitable for searching for fawns. Sunlight, ambient temperature, vegetation and weather all affect detection, so the same level of reliability cannot be guaranteed at every time of day.

Other Applications

What Else Can Thermal Imaging and Conventional Drones Do?

An aerial perspective makes it easier to survey hunting grounds and agricultural land. Thermal imaging provides additional information by revealing heat signatures. Which applications are useful and permitted depends on the location, conditions and applicable regulations.

Tracking Wounded Game and Supporting the Hunting Dog

Tracking game is much easier with a drone because you can simply see more
from above. A thermal imaging drone can quickly locate shot game even in tall grass or
cereal crops.

Without a drone, tracking in tall grass, maize or cereal crops is sometimes delayed
until the following day for safety reasons. Particularly in summer, this can often
cause the venison to spoil.

A wounded wild boar can attack dogs and people without warning. Using a drone gives the hunter advance warning and provides an additional level of safety.

Organising a Maize Field Hunt

Organising a hunt in maize fields requires careful coordination between beaters, shooters and dogs. It is especially frustrating if the wild boar are not in the expected field at all or are moving through a different section. Reconnaissance with a thermal imaging drone can locate the boar in the maize before shooters take their positions or the drive begins. This allows the hunt to be planned more effectively and improves the chances of success.

Locating Wildlife Resting Areas

Driven hunts require careful preparation. However, vegetation and visibility conditions can make it difficult to observe the resting areas of wild boar, red deer and roe deer. Drone reconnaissance can help pinpoint these locations so that the hunt can be organised and carried out more effectively.

Assessing Wildlife Damage

Wild boar can damage maize, spelt and grassland. Walking or driving across the affected area may cause further damage. With a drone, you can simply fly over the field and quickly and reliably locate damaged areas so that you can take action straight away. A drone with a thermal imaging camera makes this task particularly quick and easy.

Checking and Counting Grazing Livestock

On large or difficult-to-access pastures, farmers can use a thermal imaging drone to locate their grazing livestock and check animal numbers.

Aerial observation can also provide additional information when protecting livestock against potential visits from wolves.

Responsible Use Matters.

Aviation law, nature conservation, data protection and hunting regulations also apply to drones with thermal imaging cameras. Requirements may differ between Luxembourg, Germany and other countries where drones are used. CopterPro can help you understand the technology and the requirements you need to meet.
