For several weeks, the ThermTec Wild 650DL Pro accompanied us as a flexible thermal imaging device in mixed field and woodland terrain. Whether sitting over bait or stalking at night across wide open ground, it had to cover a wide range of situations. The thermal imaging camera sits securely in the hand, the controls are logically arranged, and true one-hand operation makes handling easier when your other hand is on shooting sticks, a backpack strap or your rifle. Particularly comfortable is the central focus wheel. It allows you to adjust sharpness quickly without having to reach forward to the objective with your second hand. The 25 mm focal length is the lens you will use most in everyday hunting. When scanning stubble fields, meadows and clearings, the roughly 30 m wide field of view provides an excellent sense of space and movement. Heat sources are detected quickly, and especially when stalking along woodland edges or ditches, the overview offered by the Wild 650DL is noticeably better than with thermal imaging devices that are designed purely for maximum range.

As soon as a heat source becomes more interesting, the larger lens comes into play. Switching to 50mm brings significantly more detail into the image. For us, this is the major advantage of the dual-optic system, because you are not simply zooming digitally but working with true optical magnification. Contours appear clearer, silhouettes can be assessed more reliably, and even individual animals within a group can be distinguished much more easily. On nights with high humidity, light drizzle or fine mist, the combination of high sensor resolution and low NETD really proves its value. The image remains usable, contours stay visible and sharp, and temperature differences are displayed with fine gradation.

This clearly demonstrates the level of detail delivered by the 640x512 sensor in combination with the 50 mm focal length. Body contours, head and neck can be identified cleanly, and movement within vegetation is displayed clearly. Switching between white hot and black hot also shows how contrast and detail perception can be adjusted to suit the background and the specific situation.

LRF in practice - distance brings confidence

The “L” in the 650DL stands for laser rangefinder, and especially in the dark this often makes the difference between guesswork and certainty. Anyone who has ever tried to estimate distances across open fields at night knows the typical trap: everything appears closer than it really is. With the integrated LRF, you can measure the distance directly to the heat source, without an additional device and without a bulky attachment on the housing, as the LRF is integrated into the lens. In fast-changing situations, this brings more calm and confidence to the hunting process. In practice, the range of up to 1,000 m is more than sufficient.

Image quality, display and settings

The large AMOLED Display with 1600x1200 pixels is a real comfort advantage in the field, as it delivers a finer, more detailed image. Contours appear sharper, the picture has strong contrast, and the eye tires less quickly during extended observation. There are also numerous adjustment options: brightness, contrast, sharpness, noise reduction and various colour palettes. In our use, white hot or black hot are most common, depending on the background. In woodland, black hot is often preferred, while on open ground white hot provides a fast and clear image.

Practical interchangeable battery system

The interchangeable 18650 battery system is particularly practical. One battery in the device and a charged spare in your pocket keep you independent. Runtime depends heavily on how much you record, how often you use the rangefinder and how cold it is. However, around 6 hours is realistic with active use. The 64 GB of internal storage provides plenty of space for photos and videos. Wi-Fi and the app are also convenient if you want to save footage locally or share it with your hunting partners.
