Measuring cartridge lengths over the bullet tip is not a reliable or repeatable method. Measurement errors of up to 0.025``/0.65 mm are not uncommon. The bullet comparator solves this problem by measuring at the top edge of the caliber-sized ogive of the bullet. This allows both cartridge lengths to be checked and the necessary seating depth corrections for different bullet types to be determined. The comparator simply attaches to a caliper and measures precisely at the start of the caliber-sized part of the ogive using interchangeable, caliber-specific inserts. The caliber-specific measuring inserts (bushings) are available for fourteen bullet diameters from .17 to .45. In combination with the O.A.L. gauge, extremely precise measurements can be quickly made, helping to optimize handloads for the cartridge length for each bullet type.
